In 1973 Tanzania's ruling party voted to move the seat of government from Dar es Salaam to the more centrally located Dodoma, though the shift took decades. Parliament didn't arrive until 1996, and most ministries only followed from 2016. Dar es Salaam remains the country's largest city and commercial hub.
