Which process turns loose sediment into solid sedimentary rock?
Answer
Lithification
Lithification is the hardening of loose sediment into rock: burial squeezes the grains together and minerals carried by groundwater cement them in place. Weathering and erosion run the other way, breaking existing rock down into the sediment in the first place.
